Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector. Although this may not be a big deal in today’s society, back then it was a problem. Tax collectors were hated. They were notorious for receiving other people’s money and lending it out at high-interest rates to make a profit for themselves. Kind of like credit card companies.
Jesus called Matthew. A sinner. A tax collector. The lowest of the low. This means that Jesus wants everyone. Even those who believe they have done too many wrongs to be forgiven. Jesus wants you. Allow Matthew to inspire you to get up and follow Jesus no matter what you’ve done.
